The road ahead reaches a turning point in 2024

This year signaled the start of a new era. Here’s why I believe next year is an opportunity to shape the world’s next chapter for the better.
When you think back on 2023, how will you remember it?
For me, this will always be the year I became a grandparent. It will be the year I spent a lot of precious time with loved ones—whether on the pickleball court or over a rousing game of Settlers of Catan. And 2023 marked the first time I used artificial intelligence for work and other serious reasons, not just to mess around and create parody song lyrics for my friends.
This year gave us a glimpse of how AI will shape the future, and as 2023 comes to a close, I’m thinking more than ever about the world today’s young people will inherit.

Is an Induction Stove for You? Here Are the Pros and Cons

The ongoing debate over the safety of gas stoves has generated a wave of curiosity about induction cooking. In our extensive testing, we’ve found that induction—which relies on magnetic properties to heat instead of a live flame or hot coil—does indeed have some significant advantages over gas or radiant-electric heat. But it isn’t for every home or every cook.
If you’re trying to decide whether an induction cooktop or range is right for you, here’s what you need to know before you make the potentially pricey switch.

Different is better than better

One of the most common venture capitalist beliefs is that a product must be 10x better than the alternative to be an interesting investment. I have spent many hours thinking about this and I believe it to be true, but I prefer a different framing:

Different is better than better.

What do I mean by this?

In order to make a product an order of magnitude better, you likely need to actually be different in a fundamental way.

“Different” stands out. “Better” blends in and invites comparison.

6 books to help make your marketing more successful in 2024

Start the new year off with these good reads about marketing. These books each offer a unique insight into how it works.

I often do the bulk of my reading for the year between October and March because then it’s outside time (which isn’t to say you can’t read outside).

We live in a time when we’re surrounded by marketing. Everything and everyone seems to be vying for our attention.

If you work in marketing, the idea of reading a book about something you do all day and that surrounds you every waking moment might sound unappealing. Yet, there are still new things to be said and new things to learn about marketing.
