On a recent Sunday my wife joined some of her girlfriends to celebrate her birthday at an art gallery in town. The S.H. Ervin Gallery was showing their 2017 Salon des Refusés. The Salon des Refusés was initiated by the S.H.Ervin Gallery in 1992 in response to the large number of works entered into the Archibald Prize which were not selected for display in the official exhibition.

During the course of the afternoon I received a text with the above image showing a canvas by Mertim Gokalp of Celebrity Chef Manu Fieldel. This, given my background, got me thinking about what other famous chefs have been immortalised on canvas.

Chef Annie Smithers

Chef Annie Smithers by Daniel Butterworth was an Archibald 2016 finalist that year. Medium is acrylic on board.

Annie Smithers is a renowned chef. She owns du Fermier in Trentham, Victoria, a rustic restaurant where she uses fresh, local produce in cuisine inspired by classic French farmhouse cooking.

Chef George Colombaris
