How Restaurants Are Adapting to the Food Delivery Boom

The proliferation of delivery services like Amazon Prime, FreshDirect, and Blue Apron has made leaving the cozy confines of one's apartment increasingly unnecessary. Why drive all the way to the store and actually interact with fellow humans when the same tasks can be accomplished with just a few clicks? And though dining out remains a major expenditure for food-obsessed millennials, many a night out are being forfeited in favor of another "Seamless and chill" session.

Delivery still makes up a relatively tiny portion of overall restaurant business, as the Chicago Tribune noted recently, currently comprising just three percent of total restaurant transactions. But even in the face of an overall restaurant traffic slowdown, the delivery business is growing.

As the War on Waste highlighted, coffee cups are a massive contributor to landfill in Australia. In fact, we throw away an estimated 2.7 million disposable cups every single day. While a lot of us are trying to do the right thing by buying reusable cups, we don't always remember to keep them with us.

It's a problem Damien Clarke and his mate Martin Brooks know all too well. It prompted the pair to create Green Caffeen, a cup exchange scheme that lets coffee lovers take away reusable cups and return them to any other participating store.

Online delivery eating the lunch of restaurants and cafes

Hands up those of us who enjoy eating out at restaurants and having a night out at the movies. Both activities may soon be a thing of the past thanks to the likes of UberEats, Netflix and other digital marketplace disruptors.

A new report from Restaurant & Catering Australia (R&CA), the peak body representing the interests of more than 47,000 eating establishments in Australia has come to the disturbing conclusion that online food delivery platforms are threatening to put restaurants, cafes and caterers out of business.

R&CA says that digital disruptors are damaging the restaurant industry by encouraging patrons to stay home and eating into profits by taking their substantial cut of the enduser price plus delivery charges.
