Food to the Rescue

Posted by:  |

Some of Perth's top food industry figures have united to help a new charity which will rescue fresh food from being thrown out and send it to people in need.Board members of Food Rescue include head chef and partner at Must Wine Bar Russell Blaikie, Pata Negra chef and owner David Coomer, Vince Garreffa of Mondo's Butchers and Don Hancey of Panorama Catering. The organisation will use refrigerated vans to collect fresh, perishable food from restaurants, caterers, hotels, food wholesalers, retailers, farmer's markets and farmers. The food will be distributed through a network of charities and aid agencies. The founder and executive director of Food Rescue, Jacqui Jordan, who has a hospitality industry background, said she came up with the idea after seeing a heartbreaking amount of food going to waste while others were in need. Mr Blaikie said he agreed to become involved to have an impact on people not as well off as ourselves. The key to Food Rescue was the word fresh. It's about fresh food having a conduit directly to people who need it, Mr Blaikie said. The West Australian, May 28.
