Can cheaper beer fix Australia's economy?

Cheap beer could be the key to stimulating Australia's economy as it battles its first recession in nearly 30 years, according to three of Australia's biggest brewers.

Cooper, Lion and Carlton & United Breweries have called on the Government to "make frothies affordable" nearly two months after the beer tax was introduced.

"We need to make a beer at the pub more affordable. It is as simple as that!" Brewers Association of Australia (BAA) chair Peter Filipovic said.

Calls mount for easing of restrictions in hospitality sector

New South Wales senior government ministers have reportedly been in talks with key industry groups advocating for a stronger relaxation of coronavirus restrictions for restaurants, clubs and pubs.

The Australian Hotel Association and Clubs NSW called on the government to ease the one person per four square metre rule to one person per two square metres, effectively doubling capacity.

For restaurants, the pandemic has been brutal: It's meant fewer customers and higher cleaning costs. But it's also introduced new technologies aimed at making dining safer—and that could permanently change how we go out for dinner.

The latest example is a new service from payment giant Square that reduces social interactions by eliminating many tasks performed by a waiter. Instead of looking at the menu and placing orders with a server, customers instead rely on their phone to receive their food and pay the check.
