Restaurant and Catering Industry Angered at Visa Changes

Restaurant owners in Australia have been angered over the decision to remove chefs from the Australian immigration department’s Skilled Occupations List.

 

Immigration Minister Chris Evans announced over the weekend that 219 occupations, including cooking, would be removed from the Skilled Occupation List.

It is thought that the changes to the list are intended to help the country to attract a higher calibre of Australian work visa applicant.

The list saw a remarkable 219 occupations removed, with only 181 remaining. As a result, people moving to Australia to work will need to be skilled in one of the remaining occupations to automatically qualify for independent skilled migration to Australia.

Fiona Wright, the president of the ACT Restaurant and Catering Association said that local restaurants needed to be able to attract overseas workers due to a shortage of skilled chefs from Australia living in the area. She explained how the decision could have a huge effect on local business.

''Local industry, especially the hotels and the clubs, rely very heavily on bringing in these fully qualified chefs from overseas," she said. 

"It will decimate our industry if the Government really makes it difficult.''

Pressing the button again returns the time to zero.

    Small Businesses in Australia Getting Tax Relief

    Under a new business tax system to be revealed on Sunday, Australian small businesses will get some help on their taxes under the new plan, much of it related to getting tax breaks at a quicker rate than before.

    Much of this is an attempt to simply the tax system so small businesses can focus more on running their businesses than dealing with a bunch of paperwork.

    If that is true then it is definitely a step forward and will be welcomed throughout all industries.
